delivers equally more powerful and more varied performance than that of his predecessor, Ezra Haynes – clean singing inclusive – by which he makes himself an instantly indispensable element of the band’s sound.
There’s a far greater emphasis on the progressive and melodic aspects of the band’s sound here than there have been on previous releases, which tended to focus more on the technical and groove heavy side of things.
It’s also arguably their most expansive and accomplished release to date. Proponent for Sentience is Allegaeon’s fourth record overall, and their first with Son of Aurelius/Continuum vocalist Riley McShane. Either way, one might also concede that this kind of behavior reflects far more poorly on the listening public than it has any bearing on the band the band themselves – especially seeing as Proponent for Sentience is yet another convincing release, which sees the Americans excelling in every area of their eclectic sound. 1 Then again, the band may just be their own worst enemy they’re far too extreme for the metallic mainstream, while the abundance of groove and melody they incorporate into their work has likely had a large part in driving away prog- and tech-metal snobs. Allegaeon are one of those bands who seem to be perpetually stuck in the mid tier of their respective scene, despite consistently outperforming their peers in every way.
